Are Madcap Mysteries the Best Mysteries?

March 4, 2016

Madcap! My favorite type of mystery. Lots of mystery subgenres have an interesting sleuth, a faraway land, great character development, and a puzzle filled with clues and red herrings. That’s enjoyable reading. But what if you’d also like plenty of laughs along the way? Madcap mysteries are those delicious puzzles that not only make you question the clues, you’ll also be questioning the sanity of the world in which the author has placed the story. If you love reading mysteries, and you love to laugh, then this might be what you’re looking for.

I won’t hesitate to say that I have a blast writing these types of stories. There’s a sort of manic delight that takes over when a new story develops in my head.

Here’s my recipe for a madcap mystery.

Take life’s ordinary problems, add a few complications, fold in a mysterious development, and sprinkle well with danger. Add a touch of bad news and inappropriate reactions.

Now complicate it with the heroine’s inability to stay out of trouble. The danger intensifies, raising the stakes. As the plot thickens, the heroine finds herself in a ludicrous situation.

As she begins to lose her mind, bring in some perfectly gorgeous men, impossible choices, horny motivations… and all the while, there is an enemy who’s gaining ground.

Make the unanswered questions taunt her. Make her demand to know what the hell is going on, who’s behind it, and will she ever get laid?

Top it off with the heroine fighting to win, making it up as she goes along, and you get laughter that combusts, causing you to look up and see people in the coffee shop staring, looking a little afraid of you. Sorry about that.

Madcap mysteries are the best mysteries, and we’re going to have some fun!
